Outdoor Activities in Bellingham
Summer is here and there are so many activities in our area that take advantage of our gorgeous weather and amazing scenery. There aren’t many places to live where you can literally be at the mountain in 45 minutes or on the water in 10. If you need some inspiration to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, here are some of our favorite outdoor activities ….

Farmer’s Market

The Farmer’s Market at the Depot Market Square on Railroad Avenue is a great way to spend part of your Saturday. With a variety of local vendors offering everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to handcrafted woodwork, there is truly something for everyone. After wandering through the stands, it’s always fun to check out the other local shops and restaurants while you’re downtown.

Outdoor Cinema

Saturday nights during the summer, you can enjoy movies at the Fairhaven Village Green. Bring a few friends, a blanket, and some treats and get ready to enjoy some live music followed by a movie once the sun sets. The movies are family friendly and everyone is welcome.

Boating

You don’t have to own a boat to spend time on the water. Western students, faculty, staff, and alumni can enjoy the facilities at Lakewood on Lake Whatcom, where they have over 60 watercraft available for use and lessons. They also offer other recreational activities onsite. If you are not part of the Western community, you can rent kayaks in Fairhaven to tour Bellingham Bay, or rent larger boats at the marina to see the San Juan Islands and beyond.

Hiking and Biking

Bellingham has an incredible amount and variety of parks and trails, as well as all Mt. Baker has to offer in the way of hiking. Every level of fitness and expertise can find a place to trail to enjoy for a leisurely stroll or for more of a challenge. The Interurban Trail connects downtown Bellingham to Chuckanut Drive for a scenic walk or ride. Galbraith is a haven for mountain bikers looking for some adventure.

I hope this inspires you to get outside and enjoy all that Bellingham has to offer. You might surprise yourself by discovering a love for a new activity to share with your friends and family. It Isn't Easy Being Green ... Or Is it?

Ron Barter and Dick Skeers, the developers of the Edgewater Place Condominiums, know the importance of sustainability in construction. As members of Sustainable Connections, Barter and Skeers’ vision is “future proofing” the building by being environmentally smart, which is in the inherent design of the building. Years of research are reflected in the use of materials, interior design, maintenance, sustainability, and soundproofing.

Edgewater Place Condominiums, located above Boulevard Park, is the first condominium project in Whatcom County to utilize Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction. ICF is long-lasting, energy efficient, moisture resistant, quick to build, sound proofed, and has a 4-hour fire resistance rating. The walls are steel reinforced concrete between two thick layers of high insulation polystyrene foam.

The essence of green building is use of life-long materials. Edgewater Place embodies a healthy and energy efficient building by using ICF construction. Experts estimate that ICF buildings are up to 8.5 times stronger than wood–framed buildings. According to the Concrete Form Association, buildings with ICF exterior walls need an estimated 44 % less energy to heat and 32 % less energy to cool than comparable wood frame buildings.

Recently, Washington state laws have changed in regards to condominium construction and ongoing maintenance issues. Many condominium owners have fallen victim to increasingly high assessments due to poorly maintained buildings and insufficient reserves to cover the cost of repairs. Using ICF construction is a proactive way to address these concerns, as ICF is extremely moisture resistant and up to 8.5 times stronger than conventionally framed buildings.

Being Green is easier than you think ………. Not only is it socially and environmentally responsible, but it make great long-term economic sense as well!

Fewer trips in the car also means less wear and tear on our streets, lessening the need for road maintenance. Little things make a big difference.
